Balak Palak: A Marathi Movie on Sex Education

Balak Palak (meaning Children-Parents) is a 2013 Marathi language comedy-drama film that deals with the topic of sex education for adolescents. The film is directed by Ravi Jadhav and produced by Riteish Deshmukh, Uttung Thakur and Ravi Jadhav. This is the first film produced by actor Riteish Deshmukh. The film was released with English subtitles, where Shivkumar Parthasarathy did the subtitling.

Plot Summary

The film revolves around four young boys who are best friends and live in a middle-class neighborhood in Pune. The boys are at a stage in their lives where they are curious about sex and are trying to understand the subject. However, their questions are met with evasion by the adults in their lives, who either shy away from the subject or simply tell them to 'ask their mothers.' Frustrated with this response, the boys embark on a journey to learn and understand sex by themselves. They resort to buying pornographic magazines, watching adult movies and even eavesdropping on their parents' conversations. During this journey, they come across different characters who have their own take on sex, and the boys are forced to question their beliefs and values. As the boys go deeper into their quest, they soon realize that sex isn't just about physical pleasure, but it also comes with emotional and psychological consequences. The film highlights the importance of sex education and the need to create a safe and open environment for children to ask questions.

Cast and Crew

The performances by the cast are noteworthy, especially the young actors who play the four boys. Shashwati Pimplikar, Madan Deodhar, Rohit Phalke, and Bhagyashree Milind are convincing in their roles with their natural performances adding a touch of realism to the movie. The dialogue delivery and screen presence of these young actors are impressive. The other actors who play supporting roles are also well-cast and deliver their parts effectively. The film also features cameo appearances by Subodh Bhave and Amruta Subhash as older versions of two of the main characters.

The direction by Ravi Jadhav is commendable as he handles a sensitive and important topic with sensitivity and honesty. He does not shy away from showing the realities of adolescent curiosity and confusion, but also balances it with humor and warmth. He also manages to avoid being preachy or moralistic, but instead lets the story unfold naturally and organically. The screenplay by Ganesh Pandit and Amber Hadap is well-written and engaging, with realistic dialogues and situations that capture the essence of the theme. The cinematography by Mahesh Limaye is also notable as he uses camera angles and shots beautifully to capture the mood and tone of the film. The editing by Jayant Jathar is sharp and keeps the audience hooked throughout. The music by Vishal-Shekhar is another highlight of the film with its catchy tunes and lyrics that stick with you even after the movie ends.
